    Really nice article Christian. I''m an ex-Gap store manager and I think its really interesting that you picked up on the bad customer service. Sure the store experience has slipped but for me one of the things that drew me to work at Gap ''back in the day'' [apart from the er discount!] was the pride in a job well done and shared work ethic. We invested so much time developing our teams and really working on how we expressed Gap through the work we did and how we treated our customers ... Its interesting that as retail design consultants we don''t put a great deal of emphasis on how an employee of brand x. y or z behaves in store. In the UK I''ve noticed the levels of customer service rapidly decline in the past three or four years. Maybe we need to address this more in our work? In my opinion people working in retail spaces need to understand how to properly connect their customers to the brand they''re selling ...

    I see your point about the difficulties in improving Eataly success in countries like Tokyo where there is not a so large Italian population. Anyway I believe that Eataly goal is to address not just to Italians. Furthermore Japan is really interested in Italians products (from cars to fashion) and, thanks to its economical situation, Japan is considered one of the main important consumer as regarding luxury goods in the Italian market. Italian cusine is considered like a luxury asset in foreign countries (it is easy to observe this attitude also in Japan where there is the most important Bulgari restourant in the world). So, talking about Eataly I believe it will have a big success in Japan as in Newyork, probably more, thanks to the Asian addiction to the occidental culture.

    It is kind of fun to imagine the future of supermarkets. I''m glad Wal-Mart''s grocery section is not included here. I believe in a kind of anti-myopic step, where the concept of grocery stores, changes to become lifestyle centers, where "food" becomes your "energy" and going to get food is "improving your lifestyle.
